Do you or your kids ever chill? I don’t just mean chillin’ in front of the TV or iPad. I mean chill with no stimulus.
If the answer is no, read on…
You know what I’ve realised? I rarely take the time I need to relax, unwind and mull over my day. Taking time out in a day to relax is a great way to relieve stress and anxiety and be more present in life.
I came home from work and collapsed on the couch on Monday afternoon. I had so much to do (school reports, cook dinner, clean) but I just couldn’t do it! I don’t ever remember feeling like this. Especially when I had so much on my plate.
But… I went to bed anyway and I didn’t feel an ounce of guilt because well to be honest I never give myself time without any stimulus. I am either reading, listening, watching tv or scrolling through social media killing brain cells.
I went to my room closed my eyes and let my mind wonder (no not mediation) I held onto thoughts, and I let them take me to other thoughts. Not falling asleep, just resting.
Do you ever do this? Does your child? We are so busy but sometimes it’s important to schedule rest. No screen time just rest… For your child this might look like you reading them a story or them talking to themselves, letting their imagination go wild. To be honest I think it is more important for us than it is for children.
Below are 5 way we can steal some time out of the day for rest to help us relieve stress and anxiety from our day:
The other day on my way home from work I felt a chocolate craving coming on, so I swerved into a coffee shop that was open and ordered a hot chocolate (healthier than a chocolate bar right???) I sat down and savoured my sweet creamy hot choccie. Have you got any time to steal away for some alone time with a sweet beverage in secret? I had so much energy when I got home, it was wonderful.
Grab the dog (or cat if you’re into that) and go for a walk around the block. No phones, just you, your thoughts and the pavement. I like to do this first thing in the morning, but sometimes after a stressful day I go for another in the afternoon.
I actually don’t have the luxury of this one, but I dream about it all the time.
Reading fiction is wonderful is a wonderful way of escaping, but we don’t do it enough. We feel guilty if we are not reading to learn and grow, self growth books are awesome (I’m a self help junkie myself), however sometimes we just need to explore the art of words and writing through someone else’s view.
Lock yourself in the bathroom
Yes, you heard me correctly, lock yourself in the bathroom for half an hour. Put on your beauty mask, soak your feet in tea tree oil, shave your legs and scrub that skin. Pampering doesn’t need to cost money. But how many of us let that side of things slip when we are busy. Personally I don’t know how some women just look so manicured! Where do they find the time? You know what I realised… They make time and we need to as well.
Take time out for yourself so that you can give to others.
